BET-C

The BET-C autonomous weapons platform is a remnant of the first attempts to tame Hoxxes. Alas, it was quickly discovered that a local species of parasite, Xynarch Charge-suckers, loved nothing better than to corrupt the programming of the BET-C units by gorging themselves on the copper wiring and electric charge within. Any BET-C yet left on Hoxxes should be treated with extreme caution - these mechs were designed to take on the worst Hoxxes has to offer, and should be treated as such. Still, if a mining team should find themselves able to dislodge the parasites, they just might gain a new temporary ally.
— Miner's Manual Description

The BET-C (Breakpoint Explosives Transport - Combat-Specification) (pronounced as "Betsy") is a rare enemy found on Hoxxes IV. It is a large, quadrupedal robot loosely resembling the M.U.L.E., but with a lime color scheme, much like that of a Mini M.U.L.E. It possesses a large machine gun turret on its top consisting of two barrels, which, when needed, can unfold to reveal a grenade launcher turret composed of a singular larger barrel.

Gameplay

A BET-C can be rarely found during missions, with a 5% chance to appear. Only one BET-C will spawn per mission.

It will always spawn with two Xynarch Charge-suckers attached to it. Charge-suckers appear as yellowish lime, circular, pulsating organisms with several pink tentacles keeping them latched onto the BET-C.

Before its corruption by these parasites, BET-C presumably acted as a security escort for an unknown previous team of dwarves. Unlike the M.U.L.E., BET-C is equipped with a large turret and a grenade launcher for offense and a Shield Generator to protect itself when in danger.

Combat

As the BET-C has poor component security, Xynarch Charge-suckers are able to access its circuitry to consume copper and electricity, and as a result they can corrupt and control it against the dwarves.

Infected BET-C units can randomly be encountered in missions, initially in a dormant state. While in this state, BET-C makes a distinctive pulsating sound audible from vast distances. Once approached or shot, BET-C immediately awakens and turns hostile against the dwarves. Like the M.U.L.E., the BET-C is capable of walking on any surface.

An infected BET-C has three different attacks:

  • Precision Burst: The BET-C fires short, kinetic bursts at any nearby dwarves.
  • Bomb Shower: The BET-C projects a shield around itself similarly to the Gunner's Shield Generator and launches 8 bombs in a small ring around itself.
  • Quick Bomb: The BET-C repositions itself while firing a single grenade at any nearby dwarves.

The BET-C itself is completely invincible to all attacks. However, it can be temporarily slowed down when inflicted with any electricity-based damage (even in its pacified state). To pacify the BET-C, the team must destroy both Charge-suckers attached to it. While the Charge-suckers cannot be frozen solid, they will take increased damage if enough cold is applied (this works the same as on Q'ronar type bugs).

Once the Charge-suckers are removed, the BET-C collapses and requires a reboot in a similar manner to repairing a Mini M.U.L.E. Rebooting a BET-C takes around 8 seconds, after which it will accompany its newfound friends and help fight off enemies for the remainder of the mission.

A pacified BET-C boasts the same impressive firepower it used against the dwarves. However, it loses its Bomb Shower ability.

For the Bomb Shower attack, BET-C plants itself into the ground, deploys a shield and then launches 8 Quick Bombs in rapid succession.
