Q'ronar Younglings possess all the same bad traits of their mature counterparts, except for the fact that they have not yet developed the ability to fire acid at you, and that their armor is nowhere near as resistant to standard caliber firearms. Kill on sight.
— Miner's Manual Description

The Q'ronar Youngling is a hostile creature found on Hoxxes IV. It is found exclusively in the Salt Pits biome.

As its name suggests, the Q'ronar Youngling is a juvenile version of the Q'ronar Shellback. It retains the same body shape but is much smaller and differs in color. The chitinous plating on its back is white and has a soft, chalky appearance while its underbelly is a deep red.

Combat

The Q'ronar Youngling possesses a similar behavior to that of its matured counterpart. It has two different forms of behavior - standing and rolling. It will always spawn in a rolling state, which is its only form of movement. It cannot walk normally unlike the Shellback.

On top of its less developed armor plating, the Youngling doesn't have an Acid Spit attack. Therefore, while standing it is essentially defenseless, as it has no attacks while in this mode. It is more resistant to damage while rolling, though not as much as the Shellback. The Youngling is also not fully immune to electrocution, meaning it is vulnerable to slowdown from electrocution.

While standing, it will occasionally open its "mouth" on its underbelly. While this is not a weakpoint, in this state the Youngling will take 50% extra fire damage and 70% extra ice damage.

Unlike the Shellback, the Youngling always takes 50% extra corrosive damage regardless of form, even while rolling.

Health and Armor

The Youngling's armor is very soft and will not fully block attacks, instead only reducing a portion of a shot's full damage - similar to the Glyphid Grunt's armor.

Attacks

  • Rolling Strike: While rolling, the Youngling can use its body as a weapon, building up momentum to crash into a dwarf or leap off terrain high into the air. The Youngling's mobility is even better than the Shellback's, as the former is smaller and lighter, allowing it to build up speed more easily. This attack cannot be blocked by the Gunner's Shield Generator, as the Youngling will simply roll straight through it.

Trivia

  • Q'ronar Younglings are found exclusively in the Salt Pits biome. It is stated that the salt in the biome's terrain is essential to the development of a Shellback's hard chitin. This may suggest a diet primarily consisting of salty minerals, such as the large white outcroppings found all throughout the Salt Pits.
  • The Salt Pits are located in the middle of the Mission Selection Terminal's diagram of Hoxxes, surrounded on all sides geographically by other biomes. It is likely that Q'ronar Younglings grow into Q'ronar Shellbacks, then migrate to other biomes once they mature.
