Mactera Grabber
“ | The Mactera Grabber is among the most aggressive of the Mactera, seeking to swoop in unseen and rapidly scoop up an unsuspecting victim in its long, clawed limbs, only then to drop them from a great height onto the rocks below. Somehow this behavior is more endearing when performed by terrestrial birds, using nuts. Many employees report a spectacular hatred for this particular breed, and with good reason - dwarves are not nuts! |
— Miner's Manual Description |
The Mactera Grabber is a hostile creature found on Hoxxes IV. It can be located on every region of the planet.
It is a member of the Mactera family, a species of flying enemies who make use of evasive hit-and-run tactics. The Grabber features the same impressively large wings found on other Macteras, but its eight limbs are much more developed compared to the others, somewhat resembling a spider given the amount and the formation on the Grabber's body. Unlike most creatures on Hoxxes, it has visible eyes, which glow in the dark as it flies around.
Combat
The Mactera Grabber's only attack is to grab a dwarf and steal them away. It does not feature any direct attacks such as melee or projectiles. In its idle state, the Grabber flies around with its limbs hanging in a relaxed manner. There is a grace period that prevents grabbing of players for 5 seconds after they are revived, and during the first 3 seconds after the Grabber spawns.
Once the Grabber chooses a target, it raises its limbs and flies toward the target, making loud screeching noises which can clearly be heard even above other creature sounds - this serves as a warning to the dwarves that a Grabber is on approach. Upon contact, the target will be instantly grabbed.
A grabbed player is incapable of taking any action. Similar to a Cave Leech or a Nayaka Trawler, captured dwarves must rely on their teammates to break them free. It is possible to shout for help with the [Shout] key (default X) while grabbed, and the player's class portrait will glow green while grabbed.
While holding a player, the Mactera Grabber attempts to carry them away, and flies around randomly with the captive dwarf until they find a high place to drop the dwarf to their doom. The potential fall damage taken from being dropped from extreme heights can often be lethal, but if a Grabber cannot find a height suitable enough to do lethal damage, it will drop the dwarf at random after about fifteen to twenty seconds. Compounding this, a grabbed dwarf can still be freely attacked by other creatures while the Grabber itself remains unharmed.
Once its prey is released, the Grabber returns to an idle hover until it chooses a new target.
It is possible to break a dwarf free early by dealing 25 damage (affected by scaling) to the Mactera Grabber within any 4 second window, which will force it to release the dwarf and fly away quickly with a distinctive shriek. Alternatively, damage inflicted before the Grabber successfully grabs its target will also cause it to cancel its approach and flee. Once it flees, it will soon choose another target to grab.
The Mactera Grabber can be attracted by a L.U.R.E. and will attempt to pick it up, but is unable to do so. It will instead hover over the L.U.R.E. until the hologram expires.
Players can break free from the Grabber by using the Heightened Senses perk (should they have at least one use remaining), killing the Grabber in the process. It is also possible to escape by grabbing a nearby zipline.

Attacks
Elite Variant
The Elite Mactera Grabber is the elite version of the regular Mactera Grabber. Like all Elite enemies, the Elite Mactera Grabber looks almost identical to its regular counterparts; being only distinguished by its aura of distinct vertical red lines with the words 'elite' above their healthbar when scanned and looked at.
Attacks
Elite Mactera Grabbers are incredibly dangerous due to both its increased health and resistance allowing the Grabbers to tank enough damage to snatch an unsuspecting or even suspecting player away from a team. The Elite variant also has a faster movement speed, giving players less time to react.
