The current theory is that the Glyphid Detonator is what happens when an Exploder manages to somehow not explode during its volatile, and usually short, life. They grow to enormous size, their skin hardening to a thickly calloused crust capable of withstanding most standard calibers to an astonishing degree. A number of pulsing, tumorous growths will usually be found along their back, which works in our favor - focusing fire on these tumors results in tremendous trauma to the beasts. But even when served with such weak spots, they rank in the absolute top list of threats Hoxxes throws at our operation. Take them, quickly, and from a distance - get too close and they release devastating shockwaves of fire. And true to their name, managing to kill one will result in a blast ranging on the kiloton scale.
— Miner's Manual Description

The Glyphid Bulk Detonator is a hostile creature found on Hoxxes IV. It can be found in any region of the planet, though it is quite an uncommon sight to find one. It is implied through its design and its entry in the Miner's Manual that it is a Glyphid Exploder which has grown to a tremendous size, and its explosive abilities have improved to boot. Its entire body is gnarled into a lumpy mess and its mouth is deformed, with many fangs jutting out in random directions. It also has three distinct yellow tumors bulging out of its abdomen. It is one of, if not the biggest creature in the entire game, even dwarfing the likes of the Glyphid Dreadnought.

Combat

The Bulk Detonator possesses extremely high offensive and defensive capabilities. Wherever it moves, a perimeter of orange particles surround it to indicate the radius of its Hellfire attack - this move consists of the Bulk Detonator stomping the ground with its forelegs, creating a fiery explosion which can deal substantial damage. On higher hazard levels, the attack can instantly kill a dwarf in one blow, and the area-of-effect means it can potentially down an entire team in one strike.

The Bulk Detonator's major Achilles' heel is its speed - it is extremely slow and can be outmaneuvered without sprinting. Its three tumors take 300% damage, though they will eventually break after having taken enough damage.

The Bulk Detonator has a tendency to chase one dwarf in particular. On Escort Duty missions, it will not focus on the Drilldozer. However, if a Bulk Detonator's Final Blow attack is triggered within the radius of the Drilldozer, the blast will instantly destroy one of its three segmented health modules. Therefore, if both the left and right health modules have previously been destroyed, a Final Blow attack is usually enough to finish off the Drilldozer, preemptively ending the mission.

Breakable Weakpoints

The Glyphid Bulk Detonator possess 3 Bulbs, unlike regular weakpoints, they are breakable.
The Bulbs have a base health of 200 that scale with Hazard Level.

When it comes to dealing damage to break the weakpoints weakpoint damage don’t apply.
Any Area Damage can damage and potentially break them, which can be detrimental since they don’t benefit from weakpoint damage.
The CRSPR Flamethrower and the Cryo Cannon can’t damage breakable weakpoints.

Attacks

  • Hellfire: The Bulk Detonator pounds the ground with its forelimbs, creating a massive shockwave that knocks back any nearby dwarves while also inflicting humongous damage and setting them on fire.
  • Dig: The Bulk Detonator can dig through walls and terrain like the Glyphid Dreadnought, Glyphid Oppressor, and Nemesis, if it does not have a clear line of sight to any dwarf or it cannot fit through a tight enough chokepoint. Its dig attack has a much shorter windup than its Hellfire attack but also deals substantially less damage and will not ignite dwarves.
  • Final Blow: When a Bulk Detonator's HP is fully drained, it will freeze in place for a moment before causing a gigantic explosion. The crater spans over 10m in diameter, and anything caught in the blast will be instantly killed. Furthermore, the Bulk Detonator launches several explosive orange globs when it dies which fly outwards and can injure or even kill whatever they land on, especially if it is a direct hit. If it dies while frozen, it will produce an explosion that deals no damage, doesn't fire orange globs and doesn't leave a crater but inflicts massive knockback. This also occurs if the Volatile Guts Mutator is active, although it will still have the explosion that normally occurs from said mutator.

Unknown Horror Variant

The Unknown Horror is a special Mutator event creature spawned only in the Haunted Cave Mutator.

This ghostly, pale-blue Bulk Detonator stalks the players throughout the map; its vague and hard-to-see apparition can only be heard by its haunting sounds and footsteps.

Combat

The Unknown Horror is the only enemy that is completely immune to all attacks, making it more of a continuous stage hazard than an actual enemy.

It is possible to tell if the Unknown Horror is nearby through its ghostly sounds. Alternatively, it can be viewed in the Terrain Scanner as a glitched black spot. Because of its translucent nature, it might be difficult to spot the Unknown Horror in some situations.

Attacks

Its attacks are identical to those of a normal Bulk Detonator, albeit the Unknown Horror's attacks are slightly weaker, and it does not have a Final Blow. Any electric attack will slow down the Unknown Horror by a significant amount.

Elite Variant

The Elite Glyphid Bulk Detonator is the elite version of the regular Bulk Detonator. Like all Elite enemies, the Elite Glyphid Bulk Detonator looks almost identical to its regular counterparts; being only distinguished by its aura of distinct vertical red lines with the word "elite" above its healthbar when looked at.

Attacks

In addition to all the benefits that all Elite enemies receive (I.e. substantially increased health, attack damage and resistances), Elite Glyphid Bulk Detonators have one additional enhancement:

  • The "Final Blow" crater is increased from 16m to 17.5m

Glyphid Crassus Detonator Variant

See main page: Glyphid Crassus Detonator.

A rare variant of the Bulk Detonator which can spawn at the beginning of any mission. Its death explosion creates a large crater of Gold.

Trivia

  • The Glyphid Bulk Detonator was added in Update 23: Horrors of Hoxxes.
  • The Unknown Horror, which appears in the Haunted Cave Mutator, shares the same stats as a normal Bulk Detonator (except health), including its weakness to status effects.
