A strange creature to say the least, the Mobula Cave Angel still has the eggheads baffled as it "swims" through the thin air of the Azure Weald. The Cave Angel is however perfectly harmless, though sometimes curious and it can be safely ignored.
— Miner's Manual Description

The Mobula Cave Angel is a completely passive flying creature found exclusively in Azure Weald. It mindlessly flies around in the air at a slow pace, ignoring everything in its surroundings. If a Dwarf interacts with a Cave Angel, the Dwarf will grab onto the claws of the creature and will be able to control its movement for transportation similarly to a hang glider. A Cave Angel can be used indefinitely with the only conditions being that the player character's feet cannot touch the ground and the creature must be alive.

Behavior

  • The Mobula Cave Angel will aimlessly wander around a larger cave, staying relatively high off the ground.
  • While near a Cave Angel and looking at it, interacting with it by pressing E will allow a Dwarf to ride it. While riding, a Dwarf can press W to steer down, S to steer up, A to steer left, and D to steer right (on PC). Interacting a second time or jumping will cause the Dwarf to release the Cave Angel.
  • While riding a Cave Angel, steering it up will make it fly slower while steering it down will make it fly faster.
  • Some actions such as throwing flares, highlighting allied entities with the laser pointer, and saluting can be done while riding a Cave Angel.
  • After a Dwarf releases a Cave Angel or remains idle (not giving movement input) for a brief period of time, it will continue wandering around the cave.
  • If a Dwarf riding a Cave Angel collides with any surface, their grip will briefly slip and they will release the Cave Angel.

Trivia

  • Despite the Cave Angel moving faster and slower based on it's vertical movement while being controlled by the player, the creature itself moves at the same speed in all directions.
  • Similarly to how Equine have been domesticated for riding in real life, the structure of the Cave Angel's arms implies the functionality of the creature as a mount, with the arms themselves being a gripping point for the rider and the claws stopping the rider's hands from slipping forward.
  • The Cave Angel behaves similarly to an Elytra from Minecraft, with the vertical direction the player is aiming making the vehicle move faster or slower. However, unlike the Elytra which is purely a hang glider and cannot move upwards without initial propelling momentum, the Cave Angel being a winged creature provides its own propulsion.
