“ | By reverse engineering and studying Rival Tech Shredders found tangled in returning dwarves' beards during medical examinations, R&D has found methods of rewiring their ally recognition systems and subsequently invert them. Removal of unnecessary malicious parts has resulted in a slim fold-out design that allows for packaging and easy deployment of 5 drones, bundled into a single grenade. |
— Item Description |
The Shredder Swarm Grenade (or S.S.G for short) is an unlockable Throwable for the Engineer. It resembles a light-brown copper pineapple-style grenade with green accents.
When thrown, the S.S.G spawns a cluster of 5 friendly, limited lifetime versions of the Rival Shredder. These Shredders are distinguished in appearance from their Rival counterparts by having a different color scheme, their highlights being green instead of orange and their frame being light-brown instead of black.
These Shredders automatically attack any hostile creatures nearby. Their attack is similar to their Rival counterparts, using a physical motion to ram their targets, and it is possible for the attack to miss the target. Upon a successful attack they apply a slowdown status effect, decreasing the target creatures' movement speed by 30% (x0.7). Additionally, they apply a "damage limiter" status effect with a slower tick rate, which adds additional damage specifically on the first hit by the first shredder on a creature. The effect duration can be refreshed by subsequent attacks, allowing it to tick more than once, but the tick rate is slower than the shredder's attack rate and much slower than the combined attack rate of multiple shredders. Neither the movement slowdown nor the damage status effect apply to players.
When not attacking, the Shredders remain near the player.
Shredders last until they have performed 12 attacks or until ~40s have passed, whichever occurs first. Shredders do not take damage from any source, and are not targeted by any creature. Throwing another S.S.G while active Shredders remain causes the old ones to immediately self-destruct, as each player may only have up to 5 active Shredders. Like the Rival versions, the S.S.G. Shredders have a special death animation where they fall to the ground and explode.
