Artifacts are available during dives from the Supply Pod event.

Supply Pod

At a certain point in every dive, Mission Control readies a supply pod bearing a selection of artifacts for the player, but he says the landing zone (LZ) is blocked. The player has to go there (LZ indicated on the minimap), clear out any rock around the pylon, and stand nearby to triangulate its location, then a supply pod crashes into the ground. Opening it up offers a selection of three artifacts that the player's unlocked. If the player has bought artifact re-rolls in the meta upgrades menu, they can spend some nitra to re-roll the selection.

The crash deals massive damage to nearby creatures (but not to the player) and can kill an elite from full HP. Killing an elite this way usually gets the dwarf to vocalize his excitement for the supply drop kill.
