UCX implementation

Hi! I'm Tots, one of the Community Managers here at Fandom. I'm here to talk with you about the upcoming changes we'll need to make on the wikis when the new UCX is released. We'll need to adapt your current content - mainly the design and implemented code - to ensure they're compatible and operational.

Specifically, the UCS will mainly affect the Frontpage, the design (logo, background, favicon, themes), the CSS/JS used, and some templates that will need to adapt their look to fit. It's still several weeks until the wiki will be migrated but I'm here to work alongside you to anticipate all the work regarding review, improvements, and adaptations to the new skin.

If it's alright with you I'll start reviewing the elements I mentioned and describing to you what work should be done. For the design, I can work with the future version and get it set up ahead of time so that once the wiki is migrated it's ready. Regarding the Frontpage, templates, and code, I can work and implement the changes now to have them properly working both in the present and future, but getting all the changes done in advance.

Let me know what you think about all of this and we can start working together on the upcoming changes. Thanks! HeyTots https://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/joeplayground/images/e/e5/FandomStaff.png (Contact) 18:45, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the link, it is very useful context for this. Wanted to make a quick-ish response, but so far discussions between active wikieditors of this wiki have been unanimously negative to UCX (Other than it being an improvement over the previous fandom skin, but that's irrelevant given we are on the Gamepedia skin)

While the talk & mockups of UCX on the blogs gives up some idea of which walls and floors you are having removed they struggle to give an idea of what comes next.

The main example here is the vital sidebar, (And it's not just me who thinks it's vital, on Gamepedia's own help wiki it's the main part of the navigation articles ) There is talk of this scrolling local navigation, but nothing is shown of it (please don't tell me the top 4 most popular pages is the new sidebar)

Also if you could clean up the discrepancy from the blog "They like clean and consistent designs that are easy to navigate, and don’t like customizations that impact accessibility. -General Fanbase" If that is the case why is fandom altering a design that is consistent due to it's locked down nature and the gold standard (given it's use on Wikipedia and >90% of all things running mediawiki)

Personally I have to say, being someone who has a 1:1 degree covering Web/UI/UX; that the excuses for the removal of the sidebar just don't ring true, I do like to believe fandom employees are competent people. So claiming we could not do it as there are a few edge cases where the sidebar content might not be fully displayed make it sound like you guys have never heard of accordions that auto collapse or simply the css overflow property or worse you think we have not and want to pull one over us. Please we all want what is best for the users so please don't treat us dumb.

If we could get these outstanding issues resolved I would be happy to make sure things do keep working and looking as similar as possible to attempt to stop any major disruptions to users brought about by changes. But won't lie, will be very worried if we can't get these resolved. And as a side note, While I tend to the Frontpage/CSS & handle the JS, I'm not the main template maker. Also would like to add, I do not wish to come across as aggressive, just frustrated at what the editors team here sees as unnecessary changes, and some degree of poor communication from Fandom (nothing against you personally) Thecyrobot (talk) 20:42, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

Hey again! I'm so sorry I missed this response until someone pinged me about it today. I apologize. I understand your feedback about the sidebar and I will pass it along to the design team, along with everything else you mentioned. I'm not in a position to make these changes myself, but I can ping the people who can! I would also encourage you to hop on our discord some time. We have a dedicated channel for Fandom Desktop feedback and feature requests that is a great place to surface your ideas as well.
