Template:Creature Infobox Cargo Error: No Such Creature Ossiran Pit Jaw
| “ | The Pit Jaw appears to be the result of a late-stage metamorphosis of Ossirans. It's traded in wings and agility for a set of jaws that can take even the strongest dwarf out of the fight. The sheer weight of those jaws renders it unable to walk normally, so you'll find it buried underground, ready to ambush anyone wandering too close. Once the Pit Jaw has been revealed, it will try to burrow out of sight and set up an ambush elsewhere, so be sure to finish it off quick. |
| — Miner's Manual Description |
The Ossiran Pit Jaw is a hostile Ossiran found exclusively in their home biome, the Ossuary Depths, as well as in any mission featuring the Pit Jaw Colony Warning. They remain immobile, hidden underground with only the tip of their head and mandibles exposed until they snap out of the earth to catch a nearby Dwarf.
Ossiran Pit Jaws resemble enormous Rhinoceros beetles with a large black chitinous abdomen and legs, although those are often hidden underground and impossible to see in normal circumstances. Their elytra have fused together, creating a large bone white plate on their backs. The same material seems to cover their legs in small plates. Their head is beige, fleshy, and sports two sets of teeth and two white eyes on each side. They possess four extremely oversized black mandibles circling their head, with the two side mandibles curving upwards.
Combat
Ossiran Pit Jaws are stationary enemies that hide underground, serving as traps for unsuspecting Dwarves. While hidden underground, they will be completely immobile and silent, but their heads and the tip of their jaws will be exposed. If a Dwarf comes near, they will shiver and make a sound before springing out of the ground and trapping their prey between their jaws. This will cause a large chunk of the ground around them to be destroyed.
The trapped dwarf will switch to a third-person view, be unable to move or use any tools or weapon, and take damage over time, much like Cave Leeches. However unlike them, the Pit Jaw will release the caught Dwarf after enough time has passed or until they are killed or the dwarf has been downed. After releasing a dwarf, they will bury themselves into the ground and relocate.
Alternatively, if the Pit Jaw misses their target or is damaged in any way, such as being shot in their exposed head, they will still burst out of the ground, before flailing around for a while, after which they will bury into the ground and moves to another location.
